Judge dismisses juvenile case prompting homeschool ban
A judge in California has ended juvenile court jurisdiction over two children in a family case that prompted an appeals court at one point to declare that parents had no right to homeschool their children in the state.
The court's effectual ban on homeschooling in California later was dropped when the same panel agreed to rehear the case, and oral arguments on those issues were held last month, with parties ranging from Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger to the state's fire marshals and superintendent of public instruction supporting homeschooling parents.

Columbia: The any-day getaway
COLUMBIA -- In fast-paced California, one town remains dedicated to preserving its past: Columbia, Tuolumne County's meticulously maintained "time in a bottle" vestige of the Gold Rush era.
Like all Gold Rush towns, fire was a tremendous threat to the shantylike construction that used whatever materials were at hand. Early canvas and wooden buildings succumbed to two major fires in 1854 and '57 before residents rallied to buy Tuolumne County's first fire engine to guard against future conflagrations.

More than 600 acres burning near Yosemite
The North Mountain Fire, burning about five miles west of Hetch Hetchy Reservoir, has consumed more than 600 acres and, as of Tuesday afternoon, was only 5 percent contained, officials said.
The canyon's steep and rugged terrain and the remote location of the fire are making the job difficult, Kaunert said. Hand crews have had to hike two miles in just to reach the perimeters of the fire. There is no road access, and therefore no room for engines or bulldozers, so fire crews are fighting it completely by hand.
